Cinema, Translation and Oral Interaction in Spanish Language Learning

ABSTRACT

This presentation explores the use of cinema as a pedagogical tool to enhance communicative competence in intermediate university learners of Spanish (B2 CEFR). Drawing on activities based on The Red Virgin (La virgen roja, Paula Ortiz, 2024), the proposal integrates oral interaction, translation, and critical reflection on gender and identity. Grounded in communicative and sociocultural approaches to language learning, the activities promote meaningful engagement with authentic audiovisual input while fostering speaking skills, intercultural awareness, and critical thinking. The presentation offers practical tasks that can be adapted to a variety of university language-learning contexts.
