Rethinking the Role of Literature in the ESP Classroom: Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence in Business English
ABSTRACT
This action research study explores the use of literary texts to foster intercultural communicative competence in an upper-intermediate Business English classroom in Portuguese higher education. Drawing on qualitative data from learner reflections, focus group interviews, classroom observation notes, and communicative tasks, the study examines how Franz Kafka’s Poseidon supported interpretive engagement, intercultural awareness, and critical reflection on organisational practices. Findings suggest that literature can enrich ESP pedagogy by promoting critical thinking, cultural interpretation, and learner engagement beyond conventional business-oriented materials. The study contributes to current discussions on innovative approaches to language acquisition and intercultural learning in ESP contexts.
