PRESENTATION TITLE

Introducing Generative AI in Spanish 1: Scaffolding Writing, Reading, and Speaking Development

ABSTRACT

Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly integrated into education, yet their role in introductory foreign language courses remains underexplored. While most research focuses on advanced learners, novice students developing foundational vocabulary, grammar, and oral fluency are often overlooked. This study investigates whether structured, reflective AI use as a form of technology-mediated instruction supports improvement in first-semester Spanish learners’ writing accuracy, reading comprehension, and speaking confidence. Findings highlight the pedagogical potential of scaffolded AI integration to support early-stage language acquisition and inform instructional practice.
