Patricia Guill-Garcia holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Valencia. Her research interests include second language acquisition and discourse analysis, with a particular focus on virtual exchanges (VEs). She is a research assistant on SOCIOEMOVE project (PID2023-151087NB-I00) and lecturer at ESIC Business and Marketing School.

When Errors Trigger Negotiation: A Classification of Linguistic Error Types and their Role in Audiovisual Virtual Exchanges

ABSTRACT

Whilst lexical triggers have been identified as the most frequently attended to in text-based virtual exchanges (VE) (Blake, 2000; Smith, 2003), evidence from audiovisual Virtual Exchange remains limited, particularly regarding how different linguistic error types shape Negotiation of Meaning (NoM) processes. Drawing on a corpus of seven synchronous lingua franca Zoom interactions between Spanish and Japanese university students, this study classifies the linguistic errors identified as NoM triggers into lexical, grammatical, and phonological categories. Findings are discussed in relation to patterns of trigger attendance and resolution, with implications for the pedagogical design of audiovisual VEs.
